godzilla 2025 πŸ‰πŸŽ₯

what: watching all 38 Gozilla movies in 2025. one a week for the remaining 38 weeks of 2025 (as of April 6th)

who: you! join the Signal group or reach to godzilla@multivariatepolynomial.xyz

when: weekly at your leisure, discussion mostly asynchronously to follow the week after (and maybe a monthly video call)

where: Criterion has some of (all?) the movies, HBO has some as well, but local libraries and other websites might have them :)

why: there are 38 weeks left in the year and 38 films, it's perfect!

this is basically a book club for people that like Godzilla.

watch a flick a week and jump on the group chat to shitpost πŸ’…

the idea

i recently rewatched the first Godzilla from 1954 and realized i'd only seen about 10 of the 38 (!!!) films made over the past 71 years. kaiju are a really interesting subgenre of monster movie, and getting involved in a whole ass canon is always fun. besides, having just had a baby, my life is craving a bit of routine, so sitting down once a week to watch a monster movie sounded really nice (and now that Severance is done airing, I don't have a weekly television program anymore). i know most people won't watch all 38, but i think that's part of the fun. think of this as godzilla being on TV once a week and if you happen to catch it, we can talk about it at school.

the plan

watching the films chronologically by release date, one a week, and then have a group chat or email thread to discuss that week's film. i hope to have a monthly video call to recap the 4 or 5 we watched that month because as Film Connoisseurs, we will all have Takes That Need to Be Heard).

the logistics

feel free to join for whatever part is interesting to you. if you can't watch the movie of the week until the next, no worries! if you only want to watch the newest ones, wait until the end of the year. this is supposed to be fun! i plan on watching the movies on Sundays. in an ideal world we'd rent out a theater once a week to MST3K style roast them, but we'll get by watching on our own schedules. then you jump on the group chat to give your Important Opinions About Godzilla. i'm leaning towards Signal since it supports spoilers, is FOSS, and runs on all mobile and sit down operating systems. email would be another option, and I'm not a fan of Discord and Slack (not just being proprietary software!), but would be open to reconsidering.

the schedule

i'm aiming to watch one each sunday night, and starting with Godzilla 1954 (April 6th) so the following schedule is a monday-sunday weekly viewing timeline:
